Defective door, just like everyone else

Manufactured Sept 2016, and issues started with the door latch detection (open / close errors) after just a year. Clearly a known defect. Errors get more frequent over time until the unit is inoperable. Whirlpool, instead of replying with call customer service. Reply with how to fix this known problem!

Open/close door error strikes again

Like so many others our microwave is malfunctioning with this open/close door issue. Started about a year ago and it's finally to the point that it won't work at all. I have someone coming out tomorrow to look at it, but - based on what everyone else says in their one-star reviews - I'm not optimistic. Spent $3,000 for Whirlpool appliance package July 2016. Dishwasher broke less than a year later. Than this microwave issue started shortly after that. Definitely regretting my choice to buy Whirlpool.

Stopped heating food after 2.5 months

This microwave stopped heating food after two and half years. I paid $85 for a service call to find out the part that needs to be replaced will cost more than a new microwave. They advised me it was not worth the repair. I contacted Whirlpool thinking they would stand behind their product but I was told they would not do anything. I asked if they would give me a credit for a new product but they also said no to that. However, they did tell me I was loyal, how nice. The lack of customer support is more frustrating than a product that does not last.

Product Non-functional

Same door switch problems

Our micro started having problems at 6 months. Technician came and said a door switch needed adjustment. At 11 months same thing, only this time they replaced the whole door switch assembly which lasted about 8 months this time. It's now just over 2 years old and we will replace this microwave once we have the money...but NOT with another Whirlpool. We bought the matching Whirlpool oven and I'm kicking myself now. I've read about this same microwave problem more than I care to say. We reset ours by unplugging it and letting it sit for 30 seconds. Then of course we have to reset the clock. Really disappointed in this brand. Model: WMH53520CS-7, Serial: TR 7 01 11637, Manufacture Date: 01/2017. Time for a RECALL!

Door Close Error

I hate to dogpile, but I am having the same issue with this microwave giving the "Close Door" error. I've cleaned the contacts and it worked for a couple of days and then failed again. We paid for the upgrade on the microwave when we had our home built. We made it 3 years before it started to fail consistently. Now we're having to replace it and it won't be with a Whirlpool. I will mismatch appliances, but I would rather they work.

Door switch issue after barely 2 years.

I really liked this microwave until it started to get temper-mental and stop working regularly after barely 2 years of use. Serial no TR 6 37 34032. Told it's a Door switch issue and both will need to be replaced $200 + service fee. Suggested to just buy a new one. How disappointing. I see this same model (diff serial #s) were recalled previously for fire hazard. Cmon Whirlpool... so disheartening.

Had for about 2 years - broken twice already

We bought this brand new in April of 2017. Jan of 2018, quit working. Something about "the door isn't shut", but it was. Got it fixed. March 2019, broke again. Pretty sure it is the same part. Total piece of junk. Between that and the loud noises our 3 year old Whirlpool refrigerator are making, we will never be buying Whirlpool brand anything again.

Broke 3 Months After Warranty Expired

I'm very disappointed in the quality of this microwave. I loved it until the warranty expired and three months later it broke. Had a repairman out to look at it and he said the fan broke. For such an expensive microwave that shouldn't happen so fast. I installed it about three months after i bought it so I really only used it for a year and it didn't get heavy use. Its used just for one person (not a big family). And I only use it to heat up water for tea and heat up left overs. I never cook in it. How does whirlpool time it so well that so many of these microwaves break just after the warranty is up? Buyer beware.

Terrible Quality

I bought this microwave in April 2017, it started malfunctioning in May 2018, right after the warrantee was up. I would get an "open/close door" error message everytime I tried to microwave something, even though the door was closed. Then sometimes it would work fine, it was finicky, and with no pattern, sometimes it would work, sometimes it wouldn't. Finally it completely stopped working, i had 3 different repair technicians out and none of them could repair it, saying it would be cheaper to repair the whole thing. I'm very disappointed, these microwaves should certainly last more than a year, especially Whirlpool.

Aweful microwave

I purchased it on 12/27/2015, it died on me today. I am very disappointed in it going out this soon. Microwaves last a long time and this is so unacceptable they sold all these bad ones. The issues i had is the same as everyone else. Sensor was saying close door when the door was closed.

Horrible Door Sensor Issues

We've had this microwave fro about two years, and in the past year or so we've had nothing but problems with constantly receiving error messages to open/close door when trying to heat food...even thought the door is closed. Sometimes this goes on for several minutes, sometimes for several days. The switch has been repaired 2 times already, and only lasts for a couple of weeks. Looking at other reviews of this model, this is clearly a problem MANY others are having. Whirlpool needs to consider resolving this issue before they lose another customer.

Bought WMH53520CS-6 in SS on 2/4/17. Was building a new home. Moved in to new home on 5/3/17. Was having the SAME door / close issues that many others have posted here. It worked some time, then no work, ect.... Now it is completely dead. It died 2/28/19. Now I have no Microwave in my new home / kitchen. I thought Whirlpool was a good brand. I guess I was incorrect. 1 star. Stay away from this brand and model.

Too many problems

Money pit

I bought this two years ago. So far it has needed the same fix 3 times. I will now have to pay 75.00 to get it fixed. The tech who came the fist time said Whirlpool made it that way so you would have to pay to fix it. Cheaper to put in the .50 part then to make a decent microwave. Told us to always cook with the fan on and that would keep it from happening sooner but not prevent it.

We purchased this unit for a recent kitchen remodel. Its a great size with sleek design. Just wish it was as reliable! Sometimes it works, other times the door switch issue. We went thru much expense to properly duct this outside thru a masonry wall. Sadly we just borrowed a countertop model to use until we figure this things problems.

Average Microwave

Have owned this unit 2yrs years now. As a straight forward microwave it works fine. However, it has been below average with regard to its internal components. It has 2 door switches replaced, 1 under warranty and 1 by myself. Just recently, it gave me an error code F4E4. This indicates a sensor failure. It doesn't tell me which sensor. The whirlpool site doesn't give any help for removal of either sensor identified. Like the title states "Average Microwave" at best. not sure I'd be willing to recommend to unit to anyone. It's below Kenmore reliability standards.

The door does not detect when it's closed. It started happening after 3 years of gentle use. Buy a diff model. See lots of similar complaints. Was fine when it worked, not I have to repair or replace. :(

Broken just outside warranty

We bought this appliance suite for the second time in three years after a relo bc we loved the styling. Now the microwave has stopped heating after less than 18 mos and the model is no longer carried. Not only do we have to shell out for a new microwave but it will not match the rest of our whirlpool suite. Sounds like a common issue - will try other manufactures in the future.

Door Latch Issue

Bought the microwave May 24, 2017. Model # WMH53520CS-7 serial number TR 7 08 18291 . The door latch has been acting up for the last month and finally went out today. The microwave is not very good quality and I would not suggest buying. The upper door latch no longer catches.

Started messing up on Thanksgiving

On possibly the worst day it could happen, it started messing up the day I was hosting Thanksgiving at my house. Like many others have stated, it started having a problem with the microwave not knowing when the door was open or closed. All other functionality of the microwave appears to work (fan and lights on the bottom). I have a video clip of the issue but not on Youtube as the site seems to require. First I noticed the light did not come on when the door opened but it still let some people heat up their dessert. After the next person tried, started beeping with the Ck Time, Open/Close Door message. I unplugged it for 10 minutes and plugged it back in, same problem. Tried it again 3 hours later and the light randomly turned back on after the door was already open. Since then, the light will randomly still not come on and I still get the Open/Close error randomly as well. It has been working as needed mostly as needed but I fear it will soon completely fail. I called in yesterday to schedule a service appointment and was told the cost just to come out is now $125 so I'm may cancel as it might not be worth it. I see most other reviewers have had the issue come back multiple times. I purchased this when I moved into my new house in March of 2017 and it is now malfunctioning less than 2 years in. Based on these reviews, I agree there should be some type of recall, extended repair program past the base 12 month warranty, or a possible class action could come of this since these microwaves are cheap enough to toss out every 2 years. I purchased a gas stove, dishwasher, and refrigerator at the same time all from Lowes that all appear to be doing fine.

Dead after the door latch problem

I have had this microwave for about 2 years. Ran into the same door latch problem like everyone else. The microwave would think the door is open even after closing it. After a month of having this problem, the microwave died completely. Considering this is such a common problem with this model, I would think there would be a recall on this item.

No longer working in less than 2 years

Installed microwave January/2017. Last two months it randomly would not turn on when you hit the start button. Something with the door switches I believe. If the light inside did not turn on it would not work when you hit the start button. Now there is no power to the unit. Completely dead. Replaced fuse which did not resolve the issue. Totally frustrating. Especially during the holidays. Quality is totally unacceptable.

It's a hit or miss when we put food in it to reheat, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I called whirlpool they told me it would be $100.00 to $125.00 for someone just to look. Microwave is bad

I had my first microwave 25 years no problems. It was NOT a Whirlpool. This one lasted two years. What a piece of junk!

Stopped working after 2 yrs

I bought a complete whirlpool kitchen appliance set in 2016 for our new house we were building. The microwave went practically unused for almost the first year. And now after about a year of light use (2yrs after manufacture date) it stopped working and displays "open/close door" message. It appears many others have this exact same issue, all after 2yrs. Hope all our other whirlpool appliances don't have some unknown defect like their microwaves appear to have.

Would close the door and it would not start, it would tell me to open and close the door. Sometime it would fix itself...now it won't work at all. Expensive clock at this point. Bought this about 1.5 yrs ago. Decided to try an American company after bad experiences. Figured it would be made better and let longer. Very disappointed with Whirlpool.

2 Years and DEAD!!!

We decided invest and purchase "Whirlpool" appliances for our kitchen remodel, and this product was part of that purchase. Unfortunately, we are just 2 years into the life of the microwave and have received the same message as many reviewers "Door Open/Closed". There is no way to clear the message and the microwave will not function until I do. I can't believe this product is having issues only 2 years into the product life. Of course, the warranty has expired, and I can not believe I have to drop more $ into this in only 2 years! Most of the appliances in my kitchen are Whirlpool, but after this experience, I am just about willing to pull all of it out and purchase products that will last. I just pulled an Eloquence Electric double oven out of my house, installed in 1971!! and it just died. And yet, this was purchased brand new, in Jul 2016 and is not functioning!! I wish I knew about these ratings 2 years ago, I am sure I would have thought differently back then, rather than relying on Whirlpool as a good and reliable choice. I will admit I am very nervous knowing my stove top range, refrigerator, dishwasher and a new washing machine are all Whirlpool! I am hopeful Whirlpool will stand behind their product(s), but I am having my doubts after reading others reviews.

Stoped working 2 years to the date

I bought this 2 years ago and now my food doesnt heat. I have tried every setting and different items. I even reset to manufacture settings. I'm guessing it's my magnetron. Disappointed bc up till now it was a 5 star unit and even convinced others to buy the same unit....

We bought this microwave 2 years ago in July 2016 in a bundle through Costco. We started getting the door open/close error. It seems that the unit doesn't know if the door is open or closed so it cannot be used. Costco tells me that the warranty is over, (they give you an extra year in addition to the mfg.) Very disappointed that the microwave only lasted 2 years. Before the door switch problem, the microwave was great. Easy to clean, always heated well, and was easy to use, I expected to get more than 2 years of use and it isn't worth it to fix it.

Bought this microwave 2 years ago to replace a similar model that we had for 10 years. We started getting the door open/close error. I ordered the replacement door switches and replaced them, figuring a $50 gamble was worth it. I lost that gamble as the problem continued. Very disappointed that the microwave only lasted 2 years. I will add that before the door switch problem, the microwave was great. Easy to clean, always heated well, and was easy to use, but for $225 I expect to get more than 2 years use before it isn't worth it to fix it.

Disappointing

We got this last year in September....now we are having tons of issues with the door switches and not being able to use it intermittently. Pricing the switches and/or service, its much cheaper to buy a new one! We spent a lot of money getting a whirlpool microwave/oven/dishwasher. I can only hope the other products hold up better.

Open/close door

This product is terrible, would not recommend this microwave. We built our house 2 years ago this month and since day 1 we have had issues with this appliance. At first it was the night light that kept going out. A little after a year the inside light would not come on. I would put the cook time in and press start and it would tell me to open door. I would do this and press start again and I would get the same message. Well today nothing is coming up on the screen and it will not work. Unfortunately I have a matching oven and I plan on getting rid of the entire Whirlpool brand and going with a company that quality means something to.

Same problem - you would think they would recall

Had the same "open/close door" message as other reviewers after one year. I didn't know this was a common problem and it started working again. 5 months out of warranty and the "open/close door" message won't go away. Research shows this is a common problem with switches needing replacement after warranty period. What happened to producing quality products?

Worst experience.

We had an accident with big fireball inside the microwave and we have to use fire extinguisher. Wife's hand finger's got burnt. Thank GOD, It could have been worst. BTW burnt one is Potato. Moreover Whirlpool only can cover technician visit changes (labor) not the parts to fix the Microwave, can't believe. Ref #7723068265. Will not buy any Whirlpool in future.

Defective garbage

This microwave, manufactured in May 2014, was included in my home after it was flipped when we purchased it in Fall 2016. In 2017, I started getting the message to open and close the door before starting. This usually could be gotten rid of by opening and closing the door a dozen times. This week, this tactic no longer worked and I couldn't start the microwave at all. Then, something in the microwave overloaded because it tripped my circuit breaker, and after resetting the breaker the microwave doesn't get power at all. I've seen how Whirlpool refuses to acknowledge that they've manufactured garbage from other customer reviews, and refuses to replace anything outside of the warranty. I'll be avoiding any Whirlpool appliances for as long as I live.
